June 10, 2026 | Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched ‘Project Ganga’, an ambitious rural broadband initiative designed to extend high-speed digital connectivity across the state’s villages and bridge the digital divide between urban and rural communities.

The project is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening digital infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh by providing last-mile internet connectivity to remote areas. During the launch event in Lucknow, the Chief Minister described broadband access as an essential requirement in the modern era and emphasized that improved internet connectivity would accelerate development across multiple sectors.

Project Ganga will initially be rolled out in 21 districts before expanding across the state. The government aims to connect all 57,000 Gram Panchayats and nearly 8,000 Nyaya Panchayats, making it one of the largest rural digital connectivity drives undertaken in the country.

Officials said the initiative is expected to benefit around 20 lakh households by providing access to high-speed fibre broadband services. Beyond internet connectivity, the programme seeks to improve access to digital education, telemedicine, e-governance services, skill development programmes and technology-based employment opportunities in rural regions.

A key component of the project involves the creation of a network of Digital Service Providers (DSPs), with plans to develop between 8,000 and 10,000 local entrepreneurs who will help establish and manage broadband infrastructure in their respective areas. The government estimates that the initiative could generate more than one lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities.

State officials have described Project Ganga as more than a connectivity programme, calling it a model for digital entrepreneurship and inclusive growth. By expanding access to technology and digital services, the initiative is expected to support economic development, empower rural youth and strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s transition toward a digitally connected future.
