OpenAI has introduced Codex Micro, its first branded hardware device developed for AI-powered coding workflows. The compact programmable keyboard is designed to help developers interact more efficiently with Codex and manage multiple AI agents.
OpenAI has taken its first step into the hardware space with the launch of Codex Micro, a compact programmable keyboard created specifically for developers using its AI coding assistant, Codex. The device represents the company’s first branded hardware product and is aimed at enhancing productivity by providing dedicated physical controls for AI-assisted software development.
Developed in collaboration with mechanical keyboard manufacturer Work Louder, Codex Micro is designed as a companion device rather than a replacement for a traditional keyboard. It allows developers to execute common AI-powered coding tasks with a single press, reducing the need to switch between applications or rely on keyboard shortcuts.
The device features 13 programmable mechanical keys, a rotary dial, a mini joystick, and a touch-sensitive control area. It also includes six illuminated “Agent Keys” that display the real-time status of AI coding agents, allowing users to monitor active tasks, completed requests, or errors at a glance.
OpenAI says developers can customise the controls to perform functions such as accepting AI-generated code suggestions, initiating new coding sessions, switching between AI agents, adjusting reasoning levels, and activating voice interactions. The hardware is intended to streamline AI-assisted programming workflows and improve efficiency for professional developers.
Priced at 230 US dollars (approximately ₹20,000), Codex Micro is being released as a limited-edition product while supplies last. Industry observers view the launch as an important milestone in OpenAI’s broader hardware ambitions, although the company has clarified that the device is distinct from the widely anticipated consumer AI hardware project reportedly being developed with former Apple designer Jony Ive.
The introduction of Codex Micro reflects the growing trend of integrating dedicated hardware with AI software tools, enabling developers to interact with artificial intelligence more naturally through physical controls. As AI-assisted programming continues to gain traction, such specialised devices could become an integral part of modern software development environments.
