Sonam Wangchuk’s Health Turns Critical on 18th Day of Hunger Strike; Court Seeks Government’s Response

Environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk’s health has deteriorated significantly on the 18th day of his hunger strike, prompting medical concern and judicial intervention as the Delhi High Court seeks responses from governments.

Renowned environmentalist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk’s health has become a matter of serious concern as he entered the 18th day of his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Wangchuk began the fast in support of protests against the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination process and has remained steadfast despite a sharp decline in his physical condition.

According to doctors monitoring his health, Wangchuk has become extremely weak and is under round-the-clock medical supervision. His current weight has dropped to 57.15 kg, reflecting a loss of 400 grams in the last 24 hours and an overall reduction of 8.9 kg since the hunger strike began.

Medical reports indicate that his blood pressure is 105/76 mmHg, blood sugar level is 80 mg/dL, while hydration levels remain satisfactory. Doctors said Wangchuk is fully conscious and mentally alert, but the increasing weakness has made continuous monitoring essential. Medical experts have warned that prolonged fasting could lead to further complications if the situation persists.

Meanwhile, the issue has reached the Delhi High Court through a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking urgent intervention to safeguard Wangchuk’s life. The petition, filed by social activist and advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini, urges the Central Government and the Delhi Government to take immediate steps to ensure appropriate medical care and resolve the ongoing crisis.

Hearing the matter on Wednesday, the Delhi High Court issued notices to both governments and sought their responses. The court is expected to examine whether adequate measures are being taken to protect Wangchuk’s health while respecting his democratic right to peaceful protest.

The prolonged hunger strike has drawn widespread public attention, with several activists, students, and civil society groups expressing solidarity and urging authorities to initiate dialogue before the veteran environmentalist’s health deteriorates further.
