Lt Col Prem Prakash Talwar (Retd), who served in the Regiment of Artillery and fought in the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars, celebrated his 100th birthday in Pune, receiving tributes from the Indian Army and veterans.
Pune, 24th July 2026: A century of life is a rare milestone, and one shaped by decades of national service, wartime leadership and enduring military values is rarer still. Lt Col Prem Prakash Talwar (Retd), a veteran of the Regiment of Artillery, turned 100 on Friday, drawing warm tributes from the Indian Army, fellow ex-servicemen and his family in Pune.
Commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery in May 1950, shortly after Independence, Lt Col Talwar went on to serve for 27 years before retiring in May 1977. His service spanned some of India’s most consequential military engagements, including active participation in both the 1965 and 1971 wars against Pakistan, where his contributions helped bolster national security and uphold the regiment’s reputation. Colleagues who served alongside him recall an officer defined by professionalism, courage and unwavering discipline.
To mark the occasion, a delegation from the Agnibaaz Division called on Lt Col Talwar at his Pune residence, representing the Director General of the Regiment of Artillery and all its ranks. Officers, junior commissioned officers and other ranks conveyed their greetings and thanked him for decades of dedicated service, continuing a long-standing tradition of the Army honouring its veterans.
The birthday gathering brought together family, fellow veterans and serving personnel in an atmosphere of pride and nostalgia. Lt Col Talwar was presented with a commemorative memento, as attendees exchanged recollections of his leadership and years in uniform. For younger soldiers present, the interaction offered a rare chance to engage directly with a veteran of two major wars.
Those close to him say his greatest legacy lies not just in his military record but in the values of honour, humility and selfless service he continues to embody reflecting the Regiment of Artillery’s motto, “Sarvatra Izzat-O-Iqbal.” His centenary stands as a reminder of the courage and professionalism underpinning India’s armed forces, inspiring serving soldiers and civilians alike.
