Pune Metro Line 3 Gets CMRS Approval for Maan-Hinjawadi–Balewadi Stretch
Pune Metro Line 3 receives provisional CMRS safety clearance for its 13-km Maan to Balewadi section, bringing passenger services on the Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar corridor a major step closer.

Pune Metro Line 3, the corridor set to connect Hinjawadi IT Park with Shivajinagar, has reached a key milestone after securing provisional authorisation from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for the Maan to R.K. Laxman Museum (Balewadi) stretch.
The clearance, granted on July 23, 2026, paves the way for passenger services to begin on the corridor’s first phase, once the remaining operational formalities are completed.
The approved stretch covers roughly 13 kilometres and comprises 12 metro stations between Maan and R.K. Laxman Museum in Balewadi. The line will run on a 750V DC third-rail traction system, while its CBTC signalling technology will enable trains to operate at speeds of up to 80 kmph under Automatic Train Protection (ATP) mode.
Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL) said the approval followed the successful completion of all statutory inspections, safety checks, technical validations and mandatory trial runs. The CMRS had carried out a detailed inspection of the corridor between July 5 and July 8 in the presence of senior PITCMRL officials, after which the company submitted compliance reports addressing the observations raised.
Before granting clearance, the CMRS also reviewed successful trial runs and verified key technical certifications, including the Independent Safety Assessor approval, a No Objection Certificate from the Chief Electrical Inspector to the Government, a Department of Telecommunications licence, fire safety clearances across all 12 stations, and certifications covering civil works, tracks, signalling, telecommunications and rolling stock.
PITCMRL Chief Executive Officer Anil Kumar Saini called the safety approval a historic milestone for the project, saying it reflects the company’s commitment to safety and engineering excellence and marks a decisive step toward bringing modern metro connectivity to Pune.
PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhari welcomed the development, noting that the corridor’s first phase would help ease traffic congestion around Hinjawadi IT Park while offering residents a safe and sustainable transport option. He added that PMRDA remains committed to completing the remaining formalities so passenger services can start soon.
The CMRS approval is regarded as one of the last statutory clearances required before commercial operations begin, moving long-awaited metro connectivity between Hinjawadi and Pune city closer to reality.
