Balewadi Road Accident: Man Dies After Car Runs Over Him, Driver Allegedly Misleads Police

A 54-year-old man died after being run over by a car at Mamta Chowk in Balewadi. Police traced the vehicle and recovered CCTV footage.

Pune, September 21, 2026: A 54-year-old daily-wage worker died after being run over by a car while sleeping beside the road at Mamta Chowk in Balewadi early Friday morning, police said. The driver, a technology professional from Baner, allegedly gave police a misleading account of how the injured man was found.

The deceased has been identified as Baba Baburao Chavan, a resident of Katraj who worked as a casual labourer and reportedly slept on footpaths along isolated roads in the city. He was taken to a hospital in Aundh after the incident but later succumbed to his injuries.

According to Baner police, the incident occurred at around 5:30 am on Friday. Preliminary information indicates that the driver was negotiating a left turn when another vehicle allegedly passed close to his car. While attempting to avoid a collision, he sharply turned the vehicle and allegedly ran over Chavan.

The driver then reportedly placed the injured man inside his car and drove towards Aundh for medical treatment. On Baner Road, he encountered a police patrol team and allegedly told officers that he had found Chavan unconscious on the road and was taking him to hospital.

Chavan was subsequently admitted to a hospital in Aundh, where he died.

After police reached the hospital and collected details about the victim and the vehicle, the driver allegedly directed officers to another location, claiming that was where he had found Chavan.

Police later traced the route taken by the car and identified Mamta Chowk in Balewadi as the actual accident location. Investigators also recovered CCTV footage of the incident, which helped establish the sequence of events.

Baner police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the driver. Police said efforts were underway to locate him and continue the investigation.

The case also highlights the role of CCTV surveillance and vehicle-route tracking in reconstructing road accidents when accounts provided by those involved do not match the available evidence.
