Pune May Introduce Weekly Water Cuts as PMC Plans Supply Restrictions

Pune may face weekly water cuts as PMC considers a 10% supply reduction. The final schedule and implementation details are still awaited.

PUNE: Pune residents may face weekly water cuts as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) considers reducing the city’s water supply by 10% following directions from the Maharashtra government. The proposed restrictions are aimed at conserving water and ensuring adequate availability through the summer months of 2027.

The state government has announced plans for water-use restrictions from October 15, 2026. However, the PMC’s final decision on the frequency and implementation of cuts was still pending in reports published on October 9.

Weekly Water Shutdown Under Consideration

The PMC is considering shutting off the city’s water supply for one day every week as one way to meet the required reduction. Officials have also discussed other options, including alternate-day supply and rotational cuts across different zones.

Pune currently receives approximately 1,660–1,680 million litres of water per day. A 10% reduction would mean cutting supply by roughly 166–168 million litres daily.

Four Major Dams Are Full

The Khadakwasla dam system, comprising Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar dams, was reported to be at full capacity. Despite the strong storage position, officials have stressed the need to conserve water so that supplies remain sufficient until the next monsoon.

The water resources authorities have also highlighted the need to manage available stocks carefully amid rising demand and water requirements across the district.

Final Decision Awaited

PMC officials have said that the civic body will consider the proposed restrictions after receiving the state government’s formal written directive. The final schedule, including the day of the week and areas that may be affected, was not confirmed in the available reports.

Residents should therefore wait for an official PMC announcement before assuming that a weekly Thursday water cut has been finalised. In the meantime, citizens are encouraged to avoid wastage and use water judiciously.
