April 13 | Pune he tragic death of 19-year-old footballer Aariz Shaikh in a water tanker accident has sparked widespread outrage across Pune, with residents now preparing to take legal action against civic authorities and tanker operators. The incident, which occurred in the NIBM Annexe – Mohammadwadi area, has once again highlighted the growing risks posed by unregulated tanker movement in residential localities.
Aariz Shaikh, a promising young footballer, lost his life after his two-wheeler was hit by a water tanker. Reports indicate that the driver involved in the accident was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, leading to his arrest along with the tanker owner.
Following the incident, residents of NIBM Annexe and surrounding areas have come together to demand accountability. They are planning to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), citing failure to provide a reliable water supply system, which has forced heavy dependence on private water tankers. Locals allege that unchecked tanker movement, reckless driving, and lack of proper monitoring have turned residential roads into high-risk zones. Many have also pointed out that rapid urban development in the area has not been supported by adequate infrastructure, further worsening the situation.

The tragedy has also intensified calls for stricter regulations, including driver verification, speed limits, and restricted movement of heavy vehicles during peak hours. Civic authorities are now under pressure to implement immediate safety measures and ensure better enforcement to prevent further loss of life. As anger continues to grow, Aariz Shaikh’s death has become a symbol of a larger urban crisis where infrastructure gaps and lack of regulation are putting citizens at risk on a daily basis.
