The second extensive phase of India’s national census has gained massive momentum within the municipal limits of Pune, with thousands of dedicated field enumerators successfully surveying over one hundred and forty thousand properties in an initial five-day operational sprint
PUNE | May 21, 2026: The house-listing and housing census phase under the National Census initiative has been heavily accelerated across the jurisdiction of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Official field data confirms that specialized civic teams successfully completed the detailed survey of ten percent of the city’s total residential properties within the first five days of the physical campaign. Vijay Landge, Head of the Census Department, verified that the municipal machinery is operating on strict timelines to conclude the exhaustive door-to-door enumeration drive by June 15.

The multi-tiered demographic exercise commenced its digital first phase earlier, introducing a specialized mobile application designed for self-enumeration. The digital portal recorded proactive participation from 1,73,000 citizens across the wider Pune district, with the urban population under the PMC accounting for approximately 50 percent of those independent digital submissions. The current field-based second phase officially launched on May 15, deploying a massive workforce of 12,000 trained enumerators tasked with collecting primary demographic markers and systematically assigning official census numbers to every structure.
According to updated property tax records maintained by the municipal corporation, Pune holds a vast footprint of approximately 14 lakh registered properties. To ensure absolute data accuracy and seamless field operations, each individual enumerator has been assigned a structured target zone encompassing an average of 800 households. The administration confirmed that the entire field staff underwent rigorous logistical and technical training prior to deployment, allowing them to rapidly cover ten percent of the urban grid and setting a strong baseline to meet the mid-June operational deadline.
