Airfares Surge, Commercial LPG Prices Hiked Amid Global Fuel Spike

Commercial LPG prices have been increased by ₹195.5, while rising jet fuel costs-driven by global tensions-have led to a spike in airfares across major Indian cities.

New Delhi | April 2, 2026: Air travel and commercial fuel costs have risen sharply across India, as global energy markets react to escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The price of commercial LPG cylinders has been increased by ₹195.5, adding to cost pressures on businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and small enterprises.

At the same time, aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices have surged significantly, with global jet fuel rates nearly doubling in recent weeks. The spike is linked to supply disruptions and uncertainty in crude oil markets, largely influenced by the ongoing tensions involving Iran and Israel.

Airlines have begun passing on the increased fuel burden to passengers. Leading carrier IndiGo has already initiated fare hikes on key domestic routes, with ticket prices rising across metro cities including Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, Ahmednagar (Ahilyanagar), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Delhi.

Industry experts indicate that ATF constitutes a major portion of airline operating costs—often up to 40%—and any sharp increase directly impacts ticket pricing. With fuel rates climbing rapidly, airlines have little option but to revise fares to maintain financial viability.

The impact is not limited to aviation. The hike in commercial LPG prices is expected to push up operational costs in the hospitality sector, potentially leading to higher prices for food and services. Businesses that rely heavily on bulk LPG consumption are likely to feel the immediate impact.

Globally, crude oil prices have remained volatile due to concerns over supply chain disruptions, particularly around key transit routes. Any escalation in the conflict could further tighten supply and sustain upward pressure on fuel prices.

Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump has called for an early resolution to the conflict, highlighting concerns over its broader economic impact, including rising energy prices and inflationary pressures worldwide.

Analysts warn that if the current situation persists, fuel prices may continue to rise, affecting multiple sectors of the economy. For consumers, this could translate into higher travel costs, increased food prices, and a general rise in the cost of living.

The developments underscore the vulnerability of domestic markets to global energy fluctuations, particularly in times of geopolitical uncertainty.
