Anant Garje, personal assistant to Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde, was remanded in police custody for three days as investigators allege his involvement in the death of his wife Gauri Garje. Family claims murder, police present miscarriage evidence. Court proceedings underway in Mumbai.

Mumbai, 24 Nov 2025 –In a startling development in Mumbai, the personal assistant of Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde, Anant Garje, has been remanded to police custody for three days following the death of his wife, Dr Gauri Garje. According to reports, Gauri was found dead at their residence in Worli on the evening of 22 November, and while the initial police assessment classified it as a suicide, her family has insisted that foul play is involved. The case has now escalated to include charges of abetment of suicide against Anant.

During the court hearing, the investigating team presented what was described as a “raw file” of evidence, including documents suggesting Gauri had undergone an abortion at a hospital in Latur — a detail that adds complexity and raises questions about timeline and motive. The prosecution argued that the presence of these materials, combined with other indications, justified a longer detention period. The defence countered with six pointed arguments: they claimed full cooperation with the police, insisted no evidence had been seized improperly, referenced that an abortion document cited dated back to 2021 and was consensual between both families, and challenged the demand for extended custody by the prosecution.

Anant appeared before the court on the evening of the arrest, summoned to appear due to these serious allegations. While the investigating officers had sought a ten-day remand, the court granted just a three-day custody under police supervision, until the 27th of November. During this period the police intend to examine CCTV footage from the scene — including footage of Anant accessing a room on the 29th floor of the building — and further analyze mobile phone evidence that has been submitted to the station.

The case has drawn public attention not only because of its relation to a prominent political figure but also because of the sensitive nature of the claims involved — abortion, alleged coercion, and potential homicide masked as suicide. Gauri’s family has vocally opposed the suicide conclusion and demanded a thorough and impartial investigation. Meanwhile, Anant’s legal team maintains that the abortion occurred earlier and consensually, and that their client has cooperated with all procedural formalities.

For the police, the next few days in custody will be crucial. They have highlighted the risk of tampering with key pieces of evidence and loss of forensic possibilities if custody is not granted for further time. On the other side, the defence remains focused on ensuring that Anant’s rights are preserved and that the investigation does not become prejudicial. As the story unfolds, observers expect that the forensic pathology report, the abortion-related documentation, and the mobile/CCTV evidence will form a central part of the prosecution’s case.

This case, beyond its immediate tragedy, raises broader questions about the handling of high-profile investigations, the timely provision of forensic reports, and the protection of due process when political connections are involved. For now, the focus remains on the three days of custody — and what the investigating team uncovers during that interval may set the tone for how the case proceeds. The public and the media will continue watching closely.
