Anthropic to Charge Extra for OpenClaw on Claude, Altering Pricing for AI Assistants
Anthropic
Anthropic has announced changes to its Claude AI pricing, introducing extra fees for the OpenClaw tool a capability that lets users connect Claude to external files and apps prompting users to reassess costs and workflows.

April 5, 2026 | New Delhi: Anthropic, the AI startup behind the Claude family of assistants, is set to change how users are charged for its popular tool OpenClaw, a feature that lets Claude access external files, connect with services like email or cloud storage, and more. Previously available without extra cost, the OpenClaw capability will soon incur additional fees under new pricing plans that the company says better align usage with infrastructure costs. This move marks a shift in how AI tools are monetised as demand for connected, context-aware assistants grows.
Anthropic introduced OpenClaw last year as part of Claude’s expansion into workflow integration and real-world utility. The feature allows users to link Claude to external documents and apps such as Google Drive, Outlook email, Slack, Notion and others enabling the AI to search, summarise, and act on information stored outside the chat interface. The addition of OpenClaw expanded Claude’s usefulness beyond basic conversational queries, giving professionals a powerful tool for information retrieval and task automation. Under the new pricing system, users will pay an extra charge for OpenClaw usage based on the volume of data accessed and connected apps. Anthropic says the decision reflects the higher computational and infrastructure costs associated with safely and reliably accessing external systems on behalf of users. The company argues this model will support sustainable growth of Claude’s integration features while maintaining performance and security standards.

Some users who adopted Claude specifically for its free OpenClaw capability have voiced concerns over the additional charges. Professionals and business customers who rely on Claude for summarising documents, automating workflows and pulling insights from connected services will now need to factor in these extra fees as part of their usage planning. Anthropic hasn’t released full pricing details yet but says it will share specifics soon, including tiered options that scale with usage. For many users, the upcoming pricing update prompts a reassessment of how and where Claude fits into their daily work routines, especially as connected assistant tools become more central to productivity workflows. This pricing shift comes amid broader industry trends where AI platforms increasingly charge for advanced, context-aware capabilities that interface with external systems a move seen across other AI companies as well.
