As Diwali travel surges, Indian Railways flags over 20 misleading videos showing overcrowded trains. FIRs filed under Section 145(B) to curb panic, urging passengers to trust official updates only.
New Delhi | October 20, 2025 :As festive journeys peak across India, Indian Railways has taken a tough stand against the growing wave of misinformation online. Over the past four days, officials have detected and flagged more than 20 fake or outdated videos that falsely depict overcrowded trains and chaotic platforms.
The misleading visuals, circulated widely on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and YouTube, were found to be old or unrelated to the current Diwali travel situation. Authorities said these clips are being shared to create panic among travellers and undermine public trust in the railway system.
To counter this, Indian Railways’ monitoring teams are keeping a close watch on digital platforms through official channels. FIRs have been registered against several users responsible for posting and spreading such misinformation. Legal proceedings have been initiated under Section 145(B) of the Indian Railway Act, which penalizes those causing nuisance or disturbance to railway operations with up to six months’ imprisonment.
Officials have also warned citizens not to engage with or forward such misleading posts. Some users have attempted to sensationalize the issue using hashtags like #YatriJihad, which the Ministry confirmed as false and unrelated to current circumstances.
Passengers have been urged to verify all travel information through official Indian Railways communication only. The Ministry reiterated its commitment to safe, transparent, and secure festive travel, stressing that the spread of digital misinformation will be met with firm legal action.
“Think before you share — misinformation can cause chaos,” said an official advisory.
