The Union Sports Minister suggested that the BCCI’s move to host the IPL finals in Ahmedabad was likely motivated by the venue’s massive seating capacity and superior revenue generation potential.

NEW DELHI: The decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to designate Ahmedabad as the host city for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) finals has sparked significant debate regarding the regional distribution of marquee matches. Addressing these concerns, the Union Sports Minister indicated that the shift is predominantly a strategic move centered on “commercial viability.”
The Minister noted that the Narendra Modi Stadium, currently the world’s largest cricket venue, offers a scale of ticket sales and hospitality revenue that traditional stadiums in other metropolitan cities simply cannot match.
While fans in cities like Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata have expressed disappointment over missing out on the tournament’s climax, the government’s perspective aligns with the economic realities of modern sports management. With a seating capacity exceeding 1.3 lakh, the Ahmedabad venue allows the BCCI to maximize gate receipts and accommodate a larger volume of corporate sponsors, which is a critical factor for a league of the IPL’s financial stature. The Minister clarified that while the government encourages the promotion of sports across all states, the final decision on tournament logistics rests with the BCCI as an independent sporting body.

The move also underscores a broader trend in Indian cricket toward utilizing high-capacity infrastructure to enhance the global branding of the league. By hosting the finale in a state-of-the-art facility that can hold record-breaking crowds, the BCCI aims to create a visual spectacle for the millions watching worldwide. Despite the focus on Ahmedabad, the Minister assured that the government remains committed to upgrading sports infrastructure across the country, ensuring that other regional hubs eventually possess the facilities required to host events of similar magnitude in the future. As the IPL enters its final stages, the focus remains on the logistical success of the event and its ability to deliver a world-class experience for the massive live audience expected in Gujarat.
