Mumbai | May 4, 2026: The Board of Control for Cricket in India is reportedly considering a fresh set of regulations for the Indian Premier League following concerns over what officials have informally termed the “girlfriend culture” within franchises during the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Multiple reports claim the board is reviewing player travel, hotel access, and off-field conduct protocols.

According to reports, the issue is not about players being in relationships, but rather the growing presence of companions in team environments such as buses, hotels, and restricted areas linked to squads. BCCI officials are said to believe clearer boundaries are necessary to maintain professionalism and prevent future controversies.

The discussions come during a season already marked by off-field incidents. Reports mention disciplinary concerns involving team staff and player conduct, prompting the board to re-evaluate standards across all franchises. Officials reportedly want to act before larger reputational issues emerge for the league.

Some reports also state that the board is concerned about social media influencers being closely associated with players during the tournament, especially in areas where sensitive team information may circulate. While no official final policy has been announced, sources indicate the matter could be discussed in an upcoming BCCI meeting.

The IPL, one of the world’s richest T20 leagues, operates with privately owned franchises, making uniform enforcement of conduct standards more complex than with the national team setup. Any future rules may therefore aim to create a central framework applicable across all teams.

Neither the BCCI nor IPL franchises had issued a formal public statement on the specific reported proposals at the time of writing. However, the development has triggered debate over the balance between player privacy and professional discipline in elite sport.
