BJP Ends Mamata Banerjee’s 15-Year Rule as Trinamool Suffers Major Setback in West Bengal

BJP VS TMC
The BJP has crossed the majority mark in West Bengal, securing a decisive mandate and pushing the Trinamool Congress into a distant second. Early trends showed strong BJP gains in border, tribal and industrial regions.

May 6, 2026 | Kolkata: West Bengal witnessed a dramatic political shift on Monday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stormed to power, ending Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year dominance in the state. The BJP crossed the majority threshold of 148 seats in the 294-member Assembly, winning 206 seats, according to the latest figures from the Election Commission.
The party was also leading in five additional constituencies, indicating an even stronger finish by the end of counting. In contrast, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered a major collapse, managing to secure only 81 seats.
Counting began with postal ballots at 8 am, followed by the counting of EVM votes. From the initial rounds itself, the BJP maintained a steady lead, gaining significant ground in border districts, tribal belts, and industrial regions. Analysts noted that the BJP’s consistent performance across key areas helped it build a decisive advantage. The TMC, once considered nearly unbeatable in the state, managed to retain influence only in parts of Kolkata and a handful of rural strongholds. The election in the Falta constituency of South 24 Parganas was cancelled due to reported procedural irregularities, officials said.

In a notable development, Humayun Kabir, who was suspended from the TMC last year, contested and won from both Rejinagar and Naoda constituencies. Kabir recently launched his own political outfit named the Unnayan Party.
Vote share figures reflected the scale of the shift, with the BJP’s vote percentage rising sharply to 44.8%, while the TMC’s vote share dropped to 41.7%. The outcome is being seen as a major public verdict against Banerjee’s long-standing administration, which had been in power since 2011.
