The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a special cleanliness campaign titled “Swachhta Pakhwada” (Cleanliness Fortnight) across all municipal hospitals and health institutions from November 6 to 20, 2025, with the goal of improving the quality of healthcare services in Mumbai. The initiative aims to enhance hygiene, sanitation, and infection control measures in all civic healthcare facilities, ensuring that patients and their families receive a more hygienic and comfortable experience during treatment.
Under this campaign, BMC will conduct extensive cleanliness drives in hospital premises, including offices, staff quarters, canteens, stores, walkways, and other facilities. The focus areas will include deep cleaning, disinfection, waste segregation, and disposal, as well as the removal of construction debris and scrap material. Each hospital will be evaluated after the campaign based on parameters such as sanitation, waste management, innovation, and community participation. Hospitals that perform exceptionally well will be honored with certificates of excellence and appreciation.
BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani has directed all hospitals to maintain high standards of cleanliness, disinfection, and aesthetics to strengthen public trust in municipal healthcare services. He emphasized that this initiative is not just about hygiene but about creating a culture of discipline, cleanliness, and safety in public hospitals.
The campaign will involve collaboration among multiple civic departments, including Solid Waste Management, Pest Control, Maintenance, Encroachment Removal, and Garden Departments, along with local ward offices. Hospital superintendents, medical deans, and officers will lead the initiative, ensuring a coordinated and result-oriented approach.
Dr. Vipin Sharma, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs), has instructed all departments to work collectively to make the campaign successful. Deputy Health Commissioner Sharad Ughade has appealed to all hospital administrators to make full use of available manpower and resources to ensure the initiative’s success.
Beyond just cleaning, the Swachhta Pakhwada campaign aims to instill awareness about hygiene among patients, hospital staff, and citizens. The BMC hopes this effort will significantly elevate the overall standard of public healthcare in Mumbai.
