The UK has imposed sanctions on Nayara Energy, an Indian petroleum firm accused of importing Russian crude, intensifying diplomatic pressure on India over energy ties with Moscow.

London, October 16: The British government has imposed sanctions on Nayara Energy, a major Indian petroleum company, alleging its involvement in large-scale crude oil imports from Russia. Officials said the move is part of London’s broader strategy to cut off revenue streams funding Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Nayara Energy, which operates one of India’s largest refineries in Gujarat, is partly owned by Russian energy giant Rosneft. The UK government claims that the company has played a key role in processing and distributing Russian-origin crude through global markets.

The sanctions include financial restrictions and limits on trade operations involving UK-based institutions. Experts believe this action could affect India’s petroleum trade routes and add diplomatic strain to New Delhi’s relations with Western allies.

India has so far maintained that its energy purchases are guided by national interests and aimed at ensuring affordable supplies for its population. However, with the UK joining the list of countries targeting companies linked to Russian crude, India faces renewed scrutiny from Western nations.
