Mumbai (Dadar) | November 7, 2025: Police have registered a case against a cab driver who allegedly created a fake Instagram account of a woman passenger and labelled her a “call girl” following an argument over toll charges during a ride.
According to police sources, the incident occurred when the woman a government employee refused to pay the toll during a trip from South Mumbai to Dadar. The driver, identified as Vinay Kumar Yadav from Jharkhand, became upset over the refusal.
After the disagreement, the driver is said to have made repeated harassing calls to the woman, leading her to block his number. Later, she began receiving calls from strangers. On inquiry, it emerged a fake Instagram account had been created using her photo and personal details, with defamatory content.
Police say the caller’s profile described her as a “call girl” and included some of her contact details. The case has since been filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (insult to modesty / defamation) and relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.
The accused has been asked to appear at the police station. An investigation is underway to determine how he accessed her personal data and whether the act violated any further laws.
Civil-society groups and women’s rights advocates say the case draws attention to newer forms of harassment using social media and digital tools. They assert that disputes over seemingly mundane issues such as toll-payment refusal can spiral into serious violations of privacy and dignity when personal data is misused.
