California jury orders Johnson & Johnson to pay $966 million after talc-based baby powder caused mesothelioma in Mae Moore. The case adds to J&J’s long history of talc-related lawsuits.
California |October 10,2025: A California court has handed down a staggering $966 million verdict against Johnson & Johnson after a jury found the company’s talc-based baby powder responsible for the death of Mae Moore in 2021. Moore, who used the product for decades, developed mesothelioma, a cancer linked to asbestos exposure. The award includes $16 million in compensatory damages and $950 million in punitive damages, marking the largest payout to a single individual in the company’s long-running talc litigation.
Johnson & Johnson has consistently denied that its talc products cause cancer, insisting that the powders never contained asbestos. The company has announced plans to appeal the ruling, describing it as “egregious and unconstitutional.”

Despite withdrawing its talc-based baby powder from the market worldwide in 2023, J&J still faces tens of thousands of claims alleging the product caused mesothelioma and ovarian cancer. Many of these cases are being managed collectively in New Jersey for pre-trial procedures and information sharing.

This ruling adds to a series of legal setbacks for the company, including a 2018 Missouri case where 20 women were initially awarded $4.7 billion, later reduced to $2.5 billion with interest. Johnson & Johnson’s stock closed at $191.08 following the announcement, reflecting investor concern over ongoing litigation.
