Pune | March 26, 2026: A major political controversy has erupted in Pune after the Congress alleged large-scale irregularities in a garbage processing project worth around ₹700 crore under the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Solid Waste Management Department. The party has demanded strict action against the officials concerned, including suspension of engineers and an independent probe into the alleged financial wrongdoing.

Pune City District Congress president Arvind Shinde submitted a formal representation to the Municipal Commissioner, claiming that the project was manipulated under the pretext of “increasing processing capacity.” According to the complaint, the corporation allegedly bypassed the tendering process and attempted to provide undue benefit to a single contractor through a non-transparent procedure. The Congress alleged that provisions under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act were misused to push forward the proposal without following standard procurement norms. The party further claimed that officials deliberately avoided the e-office system, allegedly keeping key administrative steps outside the digital record in order to reduce transparency.

The complaint also raised suspicion that the process may have been designed to favour a particular company, identified as “Bhumi Green.” Congress leaders demanded that the civic body immediately initiate a high-level inquiry and take disciplinary action against the officials involved. Shinde warned that if the administration fails to act promptly, the Congress will intensify its agitation and approach investigative agencies including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to seek a detailed investigation into the matter.

The allegations have placed PMC’s waste management operations under renewed scrutiny, especially as the city continues to face challenges related to garbage collection and processing. Civic officials have not yet issued an official response to the accusations.
