Court in Uttarakhand Penalises Company After Cow Ghee Fails Safety Tests
A batch of cow ghee from a leading company was found substandard by state and national labs. The court imposed fines totalling ₹1.4 lakh on the producer, distributor and retailer, triggering a major food-safety alert.
Pune | December 3, 2025: A court in Uttarakhand has taken action against a well-known company after a batch of cow ghee failed mandatory food-safety tests. The case began in 2020, when food-safety officials collected a sample from a retail outlet in Pithoragarh for routine inspection. Initial testing at the state laboratory found the ghee below prescribed standards.
The company sought a second evaluation, and the sample was sent to a national laboratory for retesting. The second report confirmed the earlier findings, stating that the product did not meet the required quality and purity parameters. Based on both reports, the court ruled that the manufacturer, distributor and retailer were responsible for circulating a substandard product.
The court imposed a penalty of one lakh rupees on the manufacturer, twenty-five thousand on the distributor and fifteen thousand on the retailer. Officials stated that this action reinforces the need for strict compliance with food-safety norms and shows that violations will attract legal consequences.
The company has disputed the decision and called the order flawed. It has announced plans to challenge the verdict before the food-safety tribunal.
The incident has triggered fresh discussions about product reliability and the importance of transparent quality-control practices. Consumers are being advised to remain alert, check product labels carefully and avoid items that do not provide clear information about quality testing, especially in widely consumed items like ghee.
