Cracks, decay and neglect surface at Bibi Ka Maqbara; heritage structure in urgent need of care

Bibi Ka Maqbara, one of the most visited heritage monuments in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, is slipping into serious disrepair due to long-term neglect and inadequate maintenance. The structure, often called the “Taj of the Deccan,” is showing visible damage in several sections, raising concerns among conservation experts and residents.

According to the report, the western and eastern sides of the monument have suffered the most. Portions of the decorative latticework on the minarets have fallen off, and several areas show widening cracks. Visitors have also noticed blackened surfaces and fading stonework that point to moisture damage and slow structural decay.

Cleanliness is another major issue. The surrounding lawns and pathways frequently accumulate plastic waste, food wrappers and bottles left behind by tourists. Locals say the lack of regular upkeep is affecting both the monument’s appearance and its dignity as a protected heritage site.

Experts warn that the plaster is deteriorating faster due to weathering, and intricate carvings are losing definition. Heritage groups have urged the Archaeological Survey of India to carry out immediate restoration before the damage becomes irreversible.

Residents argue that Bibi Ka Maqbara is not just a tourist attraction but a cultural anchor for the city. They say that without timely intervention, the monument may continue to lose its charm, weakening the legacy it has carried for centuries.
