In a harrowing protest against plummeting market rates, Lakhan Mane, a farmer from Ghodeshwar, set his entire two-acre onion harvest ablaze after receiving a meager ₹1,400 for 100 bags of produce.
Solapur | May 12, 2026: The persistent crisis of falling agricultural prices reached a breaking point in Ghodeshwar, Solapur, as local farmer Lakhan Mane torched his two-acre onion plantation in a fit of despair and rage. The extreme step was taken after Mane realized that the market rate for his hard-earned produce had crashed to a level where he could not even recover his basic transportation costs. This incident has sent shockwaves through the district, sparking intense anger among the farming community regarding the lack of a guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Mane had invested significant capital and over six months of grueling labor into this crop. The cultivation process involved substantial expenses, including land preparation, high-quality seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and constant irrigation. Beyond the financial investment, the physical toll of weeding and crop maintenance represents a massive personal commitment. To prepare the harvest for the market, Mane further incurred thousands in labor costs for uprooting the onions and grading them to ensure premium quality.

Despite bringing high-grade onions to the wholesale market, the returns were devastating. Receiving only ₹14 per bag a sum that fails to cover even the cost of the gunny bags or the fuel used for transport Mane chose to destroy the crop rather than succumb to the exploitation of the current market system. This act of protest highlights the deepening agrarian crisis in Maharashtra, where farmers are increasingly finding themselves trapped in debt due to volatile market fluctuations and the absence of a robust price safety net. Local agricultural unions have since called for immediate government intervention to prevent further tragedies.
