Social media platform X plans to modify its account verification system in Europe after concerns raised by European regulators over the blue checkmark feature and its potential to mislead users.

Brussels | March 14, 2026: Social media platform X (social network), owned by Elon Musk, is set to revise its verification system in Europe after regulatory scrutiny from the European Commission regarding the platform’s blue checkmark feature.According to reports, European authorities raised concerns that the current verification model on the platform could create confusion among users. Since the introduction of a subscription-based system, the blue checkmark can be obtained by paying for a premium service rather than strictly verifying the identity of public figures or organisations.

Regulators argued that the change could potentially mislead users into believing that certain accounts are officially verified or credible when they may simply be paid subscribers. The issue was examined under the Digital Services Act, a European Union regulation designed to ensure greater transparency and accountability among large online platforms. Following discussions with regulators, the company has reportedly submitted proposals outlining possible changes to its verification system within the European Union. The European Commission is currently reviewing these proposals to determine whether they adequately address the concerns raised during the investigation.

While the exact details of the revised verification system have not yet been publicly disclosed, officials indicated that the changes may aim to clearly distinguish between identity verification and subscription-based features. The move is part of broader efforts by European regulators to strengthen oversight of major technology companies operating within the region. The decision highlights the increasing pressure on social media platforms to improve transparency and prevent practices that could potentially mislead users about the authenticity of online accounts
