Tensions over sugarcane prices escalated in Kolhapur when a protester hurled sugarcane sticks at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s convoy amid continued farmer agitation for fair rates.
Kolhapur | November 07, 2025: Growing anger over sugarcane pricing boiled over when protesters targeted Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s convoy with sugarcane sticks during his recent visit.
The incident happened as the CM’s entourage traveled along a stretch of highway near Ujalaiwade during a tour. Despite heavy police presence, a farmer lobbed sugarcane at the convoy, causing a momentary disruption to traffic.
Farmers in Kolhapur are protesting against what they describe as unfair sugarcane rates. They allege sugar mill owners are delaying payments and not offering justifiable pricing tied to actual production costs.
Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, a farmers’ organisation, has been vocal about withholding dues from earlier seasons and demands greater transparency in weighing and settlement.
Following the sugarcane-throwing incident, law enforcement moved to clear the debris and restore traffic flow on the busy route. Administrators say they are investigating who threw the cane and whether it was a coordinated act.
Leaders say the protest is not likely to die down soon. Farmers warn of more aggressive action unless their demands are addressed.
