Farmers Face Fertiliser Shortage as Demand Surges; Authorities Assure Supply and Monitoring
Rising demand for fertilisers during the crucial agricultural season has triggered concerns among farmers, with authorities assuring adequate supply while monitoring distribution to prevent shortages and black-marketing.

March 14, 2026 | Pune Concerns over fertiliser availability have surfaced among farmers as demand increases during the ongoing agricultural season. Many cultivators have reported difficulties in obtaining essential fertilisers, prompting authorities to step up monitoring and ensure smooth distribution across agricultural markets.Farmers from several regions have claimed that supplies of key fertilisers are not reaching retail outlets in sufficient quantities. This has led to long queues outside fertiliser shops and anxiety among cultivators preparing their fields for upcoming crop cycles. Agricultural experts note that timely access to fertilisers is crucial for maintaining crop productivity and avoiding delays in sowing activities.
Officials from the agriculture department have acknowledged the surge in demand but maintained that there is no major shortage at the state level. According to authorities, the situation is largely due to temporary supply imbalances and increased seasonal demand. They said efforts are being made to streamline distribution and ensure that fertilisers reach farmers without delay.

To prevent hoarding or black-marketing, district administrations have also begun inspecting fertiliser shops and verifying stock levels. Retailers have been instructed to sell fertilisers strictly as per government guidelines and maintain proper records of sales. Farmers have been urged to purchase only the required quantity and report irregularities to local agriculture officers.Meanwhile, agricultural organisations have demanded closer monitoring of the supply chain and better planning to ensure uninterrupted fertiliser availability during peak farming periods. Experts believe coordinated efforts between government agencies, distributors and farmers will be essential to stabilise supply and support agricultural productivity
