Fatal Accident On Katraj–Pisoli Stretch Raises New Road Safety Alarms In Pune

Pune | December 3, 2025: A serious accident on the Katraj–Pisoli stretch has once again highlighted the dangers faced by two-wheeler riders on this busy route. A 55-year-old man, identified as Dattatray Murlidhar Bhapkar, lost his life after a speeding truck rammed his scooter from behind near a marble showroom. The impact caused him to fall, and the truck’s rear wheel crushed his upper body. He died on the spot. His companion, Bharat Suresh Kondhare from Kondhwa, sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Residents say this incident reflects a larger pattern of crashes on the stretch, where narrow lanes, uneven surfaces and continuous movement of heavy vehicles create hazardous conditions. Locals have repeatedly demanded stricter traffic regulation and better road design, warning that two-wheeler riders remain especially vulnerable.
Police have registered a case and begun examining CCTV footage to identify and trace the truck involved. Officers stated that the investigation is being prioritised due to the alarming rise in fatal incidents reported from this zone.
The Katraj–Pisoli route has been marked as a high-risk corridor for years, with several fatal collisions occurring between the tunnel section and the inner city. Many experts argue that road engineering improvements, routine speed monitoring and limits on heavy-vehicle movement are urgently needed to prevent further tragedies.
The latest accident has intensified calls for long-term safety measures rather than temporary responses after each mishap, as commuters express growing concern about the deteriorating safety standards on Pune’s arterial roads.
