Gig Workers Forum Announces Statewide Strike on 9 October, Ola/Uber/Rapido Hit Hard
Gig workers across Maharashtra to strike on October 9 against aggregator practices — Ola, Uber, Rapido services to shut down for 24 hours.
Pune, October 07, 2025: In a major development affecting commuters across Maharashtra, the Indian Gig Workers Forum has called for a statewide strike on Thursday, 9 October, demanding fairer policies, transparent rates, and accountability from ride-hailing platforms. The strike is expected to halt services of Ola, Uber, Rapido and other app-based transport services, putting pressure on authorities and operators to address grievances of gig workers.
According to the announcement, the strike stems from alleged discriminatory practices by aggregators and the Transport Department’s inaction toward complaints raised by drivers. The Forum says that despite repeated appeals, drivers’ demands for revision in fare structures, greater regulatory clarity, and equitable treatment remain unaddressed. Under the proposed shutdown, app-based passenger services—cabs, moto-taxis, bike taxis—will stop functioning for the entire day.
Workers from multiple districts, especially urban centers like Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, and Aurangabad, are expected to join the protest. The strike is seen not just as a demand for better earnings but also as a call to reform how the gig economy is regulated in Maharashtra. The Forum has warned of escalating measures if their demands are ignored.
For commuters, the impact could be severe. With services suspended, many may be left scrambling for alternatives—public transport, autos, or walking. Historically, such shutdowns have caused chaos in peak hours, especially at airport routes and major business districts. Some drivers have already started indicating their support, making the shutdown likely more than symbolic.
In response to earlier strikes, authorities have acknowledged the need for aggregator reforms. However, concrete steps have lagged. The October 9 strike could be a turning point: if the state government and transport bodies engage meaningfully, reforms could follow. If not, the protest may prolong.
