Government Pushes for 30-Day Mobile Recharge Plans to End 28-Day Cycle Confusion

New Delhi | March 25, 2026: In a move aimed at simplifying mobile billing and enhancing transparency, the government is pushing telecom operators to adopt 30-day recharge plans, replacing the widely used 28-day cycle that has long been a source of confusion for consumers. Currently, most prepaid mobile plans operate on a 28-day validity, requiring users to recharge 13 times a year instead of the standard 12 monthly cycles. This discrepancy has often led to additional costs for users, sparking concerns over hidden charges and lack of clarity in telecom billing practices.

The proposed shift to 30-day plans is expected to align mobile recharges with calendar months, making it easier for users to manage their expenses and understand billing cycles. Authorities believe this change will improve consumer experience and bring greater transparency to the telecom sector. Regulators have already directed telecom companies to offer at least one plan with a validity of 30 days or one month, though adoption across providers has been inconsistent. The latest push is seen as an effort to standardize this practice across the industry.

Industry experts note that while telecom operators may need to adjust pricing structures, the move could strengthen consumer trust and reduce complaints related to billing confusion.
