April 3, 2026 | Washington: After nearly five decades, humanity has once again set its sights on the Moon. NASA’s Artemis 2 mission was launched early Thursday morning from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, marking the first crewed lunar mission since the Apollo era. The spacecraft lifted off around 4 am, carrying four astronauts who will travel to the Moon, orbit it once, and return safely to Earth after nearly 10 days. Unlike Apollo missions, the Artemis 2 crew will not land on the lunar surface, but the mission is being seen as a major milestone in preparing for future Moon landings and long-term lunar exploration.

The crew includes American astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, along with Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Christina Koch is set to become the first woman to travel into the lunar vicinity, a significant achievement in space history. NASA officials said the mission is designed to test critical technologies and systems that will support future human landings under the Artemis programme. The mission will also attempt a unique lunar flyby, passing over the far side of the Moon a region not visible from Earth to evaluate navigation and communication capabilities in deep space.

According to NASA, the Artemis 2 mission carries an estimated cost of nearly ₹7.7 lakh crore, reflecting the scale and ambition of the programme. Scientists believe this mission will provide valuable data to help build a sustainable human presence on the Moon, including plans for setting up a future lunar base. During the journey, astronauts will rely on freeze-dried food, which can be consumed after mixing with water. A compact food warmer has been provided for heating meals. For rest, the crew will use hammock-like sleeping bags in the spacecraft. A specialised space toilet system using vacuum-based technology has been installed for waste management. The Artemis 2 mission has renewed global attention on space exploration, signalling that the world is entering a new era of human travel beyond Earth.
