In a major medical innovation, an Indian biotech startup has developed the country’s first artificial liver tissue using 3D printing, marking a significant step toward future organ creation and advanced drug testing.

April 8, 2026 | Hyderabad In a significant advancement for India’s biotechnology sector, Bengaluru-based startup Pandorum Technologies has successfully developed the country’s first artificial human liver tissue using 3D printing technology. The breakthrough represents a major step toward creating lab-grown organs and improving medical research capabilities. The engineered tissue is designed to replicate key functions of a human liver, including detoxification, metabolism, and the secretion of essential biochemicals such as albumin and cholesterol. According to the company, the lab-grown tissue can survive for several weeks, making it suitable for research and testing applications.
Founded by researchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Pandorum aims to create functional human organs on demand. The artificial liver tissue is constructed using millions of liver cells arranged in a three-dimensional structure, with a specialized biomaterial acting as a medium during the printing process. Experts believe this development could play a crucial role in addressing the shortage of organ donors in India. While fully functional transplantable organs may still take years to develop, the current technology is already being used to test new drugs and study disease behaviour more effectively.

Additionally, the innovation has the potential to reduce dependence on animal testing and lower the cost of drug development by providing more accurate human-like models for early-stage trials. Scientists say such advancements could lead to safer and more efficient treatments in the future. The achievement highlights India’s growing capabilities in biotechnology and regenerative medicine, opening new possibilities for healthcare innovation and life-saving treatments in the years ahead.
