April 6 | New Delhi: In a significant move to safeguard its energy needs amid geopolitical tensions in West Asia, India has diversified its fuel import strategy by turning to Argentina for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies. The shift comes as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz through which nearly 60 percent of India’s LPG imports pass pose serious risks to energy security. Argentina has emerged as a key partner, exporting nearly 50,000 tonnes of LPG to India in the first quarter of 2026, more than double the 22,000 tonnes supplied in the entire previous year. Of this, around 39,000 tonnes have already reached Indian ports, while the remaining shipments are currently in transit. The supplies are being routed from Argentina’s Bahia Blanca port to Dahej in Gujarat, covering a distance of nearly 20,000 kilometres.

The development highlights a broader shift in India’s energy sourcing strategy. To mitigate risks associated with overdependence on traditional supply routes, the country has expanded its pool of supplier nations from 20 to 41. Apart from conventional partners such as Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, India is increasingly sourcing oil and gas from countries including Brazil, Nigeria, Angola, Venezuela, Canada, and Norway. Notably, around 70 percent of India’s crude oil imports are now being transported through routes that bypass the Strait of Hormuz, reducing vulnerability to regional disruptions. Officials and experts have described this diversification strategy as both timely and forward-looking, ensuring stability in fuel supply chains.

Argentina, which holds vast reserves of natural gas, has expressed readiness to play a larger role in India’s energy framework. The growing partnership between the two nations signals a strategic realignment in global energy trade, driven by the need for resilience and long-term security.
