A missile attack on two United Arab Emirates (UAE)-flagged commercial oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz has claimed the life of an Indian sailor and injured eight crew members, including six Indian nationals. The incident has prompted India to summon senior Iranian diplomatic officials to convey its concerns over the attack.

According to official statements, the UAE-flagged tankers Mombasa and Bahia were struck while sailing along the southern route of the Strait of Hormuz in Omani territorial waters during the early hours of Tuesday. The attack reportedly caused extensive damage to both vessels and triggered major fires onboard, resulting in significant property losses.

The fatality occurred aboard the tanker Mombasa, where one Indian crew member lost his life. Among the eight injured are six Indian nationals and two Ukrainian sailors. Medical authorities said four of the injured remain in critical condition and are receiving intensive treatment.

Following the incident, the Government of India summoned Iranian Deputy Chief of Mission Mohammad Javad Hosseini along with other senior Iranian diplomatic officials to the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. The diplomatic move came after a high-level review meeting held in response to the attack and the subsequent official statement issued by the UAE Ministry of Defence.

The latest strike further escalates tensions in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route through which a substantial portion of the world’s oil trade passes. The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of commercial shipping and the security of international maritime traffic in the region.

According to available reports, the latest casualty raises the number of Indian nationals killed in the ongoing West Asia conflict to 11. Last month, three Indian sailors were among those killed during an attack on the Palau-flagged tanker MT Cebelo. Several maritime rescue operations have also been carried out in recent weeks to evacuate crews from vessels caught in the conflict zone.
