Instagram to End Encrypted Chats from May 8, 2026, Raising Privacy Concerns
Instagram will discontinue its encrypted direct messaging feature from May 8, 2026, reducing message privacy and allowing potential access for monitoring, while pushing users toward alternative secure platforms like WhatsApp
Pune | 17 March, 2026: Instagram has announced that it will discontinue its encrypted direct messaging feature starting May 8, 2026, marking a significant shift in how user conversations are secured on the platform.
The feature, known as end-to-end encryption, ensures that only the sender and receiver can read messages, preventing even the company from accessing the content. However, after the deadline, private chats on Instagram will no longer have this level of protection. The decision has been confirmed by its parent company, Meta Platforms.

According to company representatives, one of the primary reasons behind this move is the low adoption rate. Many users had not enabled the encryption setting, limiting its overall usage. The change also reflects a broader strategic shift by Meta in how it manages privacy features across its different platforms.
Users who currently have encrypted chats will receive in-app notifications. They are advised to download or save important messages and media files before the feature is discontinued.Privacy experts have raised concerns, stating that encryption is one of the most effective tools to protect users from hacking and surveillance. Its removal could weaken user privacy. On the other hand, some government bodies and child safety organizations argue that encryption makes it difficult to detect illegal activities or harmful content.

As an alternative, WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, continues to offer end-to-end encryption by default. Users seeking higher privacy standards may consider shifting to such platforms.
