Kerosene to Be Offered as Alternative to Domestic LPG Amid Price Rise, Says Minister Chhagan Bhujbal
Amid rising LPG prices due to global tensions, Maharashtra will provide kerosene through government fuel pumps as an alternative, while assuring adequate gas supply and prioritising domestic consumers.
March 17, 2026 | Mumbai In response to rising fuel prices and supply concerns triggered by geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States, the Maharashtra government has announced kerosene as an alternative to domestic LPG. State Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal made the announcement in the Legislative Council on Monday. Bhujbal assured that there is no immediate cause for concern regarding LPG availability, as the Centre has confirmed sufficient stock. To stabilise supply, daily LPG production in refineries has been increased from 9,000 metric tonnes to 11,000 metric tonnes. However, as a precautionary measure, the state will make kerosene available at fuel stations operated by government oil companies.
The decision comes amid a noticeable rise in fuel prices. Over the past month, domestic LPG cylinder prices have increased by ₹60, while commercial cylinder rates have gone up by ₹115. Additionally, prices of edible oils have also witnessed a steady rise during the same period. Authorities have intensified action against hoarding, with over 2,100 inspections conducted, leading to the seizure of more than 1,200 cylinders and multiple arrests. The government has also outlined a priority-based distribution system, ensuring domestic consumers receive the highest preference, followed by essential institutions such as hospitals, educational facilities, and public services.
Officials noted that while kerosene distribution had earlier been restricted due to court directives, the current situation has necessitated its reintroduction as a temporary relief measure. The move is expected to ease the burden on households facing rising fuel costs.
