BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has demanded scrutiny of birth certificates issued in Pune over the last three years and a verification drive to identify and repatriate Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally

Pune | March 13, 2026: Kirit Somaiya has called for a detailed verification of birth certificates issued in Pune in order to identify Bangladeshi nationals allegedly residing illegally in the city. The demand was made during a meeting with party office-bearers at the Pune Municipal Corporation on Thursday.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Somaiya said that birth certificates issued by the civic body over the last three years should be thoroughly examined. He also proposed a door-to-door verification drive to determine whether the individuals holding these certificates were genuinely born in Pune or elsewhere in India.

The meeting was attended by Mayor Manjusha Nagpurkar, Leader of the House Shrinath Bhimale, BJP group leader Ganesh Bidkar, along with senior municipal officials and heads of various departments.

Somaiya stated that strict legal action should be initiated against individuals who are unable to provide valid proof of birth in Pune or elsewhere in India. He further claimed that the state government led by Devendra Fadnavis has cancelled nearly three lakh bogus birth certificates across Maharashtra over the past year.

Referring to the upcoming Special Intensive Revision of voter lists scheduled to begin on April 1, Somaiya alleged that a large number of illegal voters may also exist in Maharashtra. He cited examples of similar exercises in other states, claiming that millions of bogus voters were previously identified elsewhere.

According to Somaiya, an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 Bangladeshi nationals may currently be residing illegally in Pune. He added that the state government has also prepared a Standard Operating Procedure to address the issue of Rohingya infiltration, and a special combing operation could be carried out after the state legislative session concludes.
