Kolhapur ST division of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is reporting a significant financial shortfall as daily operational costs exceed revenue, raising concerns about sustainability and service provision

Kolhapur | 25 February 2026: The Kolhapur division of MSRTC’s State Transport (ST) is facing a daily revenue‑expenditure gap of roughly ₹13 lakh. According to transport department sources, the division earns about ₹1.65 crore per day, while daily expenses amount to approximately ₹1.78 crore, resulting in a persistent shortfall that puts pressure on its financial health and operational efficiency.

Officials say this deficit reflects broader challenges in regional transport operations, where fixed fare structures and rising costs strain income. MSRTC fare rates have remained largely unchanged for years, while costs such as fuel, maintenance and staff expenses continue to rise, contributing to revenue stagnation.

Transport experts warn that unless corrective measures are taken such as revisiting fare policies, restructuring routes, and improving fleet utilisation the daily losses could further deepen, impacting the quality and frequency of services for commuters in the Kolhapur region.
