Kolhapur’s civic action committee confronted municipal officials after the ₹92-lakh “jumping lawn” at Shahu Khasbag Maidan went missing. Officials failed to produce records, triggering public anger and demands for a thorough investigation.

Kolhapur| 06 December 2025: The long-standing civic dispute over the “jumping lawn” at Shahu Khasbag Maidan reached a boiling point this week as members of the Kolhapur Civic Action Committee confronted municipal engineers about the missing facility. The lawn, which was reportedly installed at a combined cost of nearly ₹92 lakh across two separate works, is now nowhere to be seen, raising serious questions about transparency and accountability within the municipal system.

Committee members said the lawn was first laid for about ₹36 lakh, followed by another installation costing around ₹56 lakh in July 2024. Despite this substantial expenditure, the Maidan currently shows no signs of a developed lawn. Instead, the gallery area is covered in wild grass, uneven soil and clear neglect. The committee demanded that municipal officials present before-after photographs, work records and maintenance logs. Officials, however, failed to furnish satisfactory documentation during the 90-minute confrontation, further fuelling public frustration.

Local wrestlers and activists say the disappearance of the lawn is not an isolated issue but part of an ongoing pattern of mismanagement and poor upkeep. They allege that repeated claims of “development work” have drained funds without improving the condition of the venue.

Khasbag Maidan holds historic significance as one of Maharashtra’s iconic wrestling venues, established during the era of Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj.

Protesters have called for a time-bound audit to determine whether the allocated funds were used as stated. They say the Maidan must be restored urgently, especially with major wrestling events scheduled in the coming months. The committee has also asked the municipal administration to publicly clarify the status of the project and take action against those responsible for lapses.

With rising pressure from citizens, the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation now faces a crucial test of transparency and accountability.
