Locals in Sahyadri Tiger Reserve name tigers ‘Senapati’, ‘Subedar’ and ‘Baji’ to foster pride and conservation, while Operation Tara brings tigresses from Tadoba to boost biodiversity and sustainable tiger numbers.
Kolhapur|September 25,2025:In a rare show of public participation, locals around the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) in Maharashtra have named three resident tigers ‘Senapati’, ‘Subedar’ and ‘Baji’. According to forest officials, the move reflects a growing sense of pride and ownership among nearby communities and is expected to strengthen tiger conservation efforts in the region.

As per data from STR, the identified tigers include STR-T1 (Senapati), STR-T2 (Subedar) and STR-T3 (Baji). The names, drawn from regional history and tradition, have resonated strongly with villagers and tourists alike. “The tigers in our Sahyadri Tiger Reserve have been given these popular names by the local people. This increases public awareness about tigers, builds a close bond with them and gives a new impetus to the conservation work,” said Tushar Chavan, Area Director, STR. He added that the names also highlight the rich heritage of the Sahyadri region.

Alongside this initiative, the Forest Department is working on “Operation Tara,” a special programme to bring tigresses from Tadoba–Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) to Sahyadri. Officials say the step will enhance biodiversity, ensure genetic diversity and sustainably increase the tiger population.

Wildlife experts view this mix of community engagement and scientific management as a model for tiger reserves elsewhere. By blending cultural identity with conservation science, Sahyadri Tiger Reserve aims to create a stronger base for wildlife protection, eco-tourism and public awareness.
