Pune | March 26, 2026: The central government’s PM-Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme has gained significant momentum in Maharashtra, with close to two lakh households installing rooftop solar systems. According to official data, a total of 1,99,585 residential consumers in the state have installed solar units under the scheme, marking Maharashtra as one of the leading performers in the national rollout. To further encourage local-level implementation, the Centre has announced an incentive grant for local self-government bodies, including gram panchayats, municipal councils and municipal corporations. Under the incentive structure, local bodies will receive ₹1,000 for every rooftop solar unit installed within their jurisdiction. Based on the current installation count, Maharashtra’s local bodies are expected to collectively receive ₹19.15 crore as an incentive.

The PM-Surya Ghar scheme aims to provide relief to households consuming up to 300 units of electricity per month by enabling them to reduce their electricity bills to zero through solar power generation. The scheme offers subsidies of up to ₹78,000 for installing a 3 kW solar rooftop system. In addition, beneficiaries can avail loans from nationalised banks at low interest rates without collateral to finance the installation. Officials said the incentive for local bodies has been introduced to motivate gram panchayats and urban civic bodies to actively promote the scheme and ensure maximum adoption at the grassroots level.

Data indicates that several districts have crossed the 10,000-installation mark. Nagpur leads with 30,232 solar installations, eligible for an incentive of ₹3.02 crore. Jalgaon follows with 14,494 installations (₹1.44 crore), while Pune has recorded 13,820 installations (₹1.38 crore). Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has registered 12,944 installations, Nashik 12,493 and Amravati 10,849. With financial incentives now tied to local participation, officials expect faster expansion of rooftop solar coverage across Maharashtra in the coming months.
