Maharashtra government forms a special cell to track missing women, leading to a 10% rise in recovery rate, says Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The Government of Maharashtra has launched a dedicated state-level Special Cell to trace missing women and girls, a move that officials say has contributed to a 10% increase in recovery rates over the past year. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the development during a press briefing, highlighting the government’s focus on enhancing women’s safety and strengthening law enforcement mechanisms.

In recent years, the issue of missing women has drawn widespread public concern across the state, with activists demanding faster action and better coordination among police forces. In response, the State Home Department mobilized senior officers and specialists to form the Special Cell, which operates with centralized data systems, enhanced tracking tools, and coordinated field action
According to officials, the Special Cell connects multiple wings of law enforcement, including women’s safety branches and cyber units, to build real-time intelligence on missing person cases.
“The objective is to reduce delays and ensure that critical information is shared without bureaucratic lag,” said a senior official who oversees the cell’s operations. “We are now able to track leads more quickly and deploy resources where they are most needed.”
The initiative also integrates data from local police stations, creating a state-wide database of missing women that is regularly updated. The system enables fast cross-checking with State Crime Records Bureau data, improving the chances of early recovery.

Chief Minister Fadnavis said this new model has led to noticeable results. “In the last fiscal year, we have recorded a 10% rise in the recovery rate of missing women. This reflects better coordination, focused investigations, and the effective use of technology,” he stated.
The Special Cell also collaborates with NGOs, community groups, and local volunteers to widen search efforts and raise awareness. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious information through helplines and dedicated WhatsApp numbers, which are monitored 24/7 by the cell.
One of the key features of the initiative is its use of modern technology:
- Geo-tracking tools to analyze last known locations
- AI-enabled predictive analytics to identify patterns in disappearance cases
- Shared digital dashboards for faster information exchange between districts
According to police officials, the integration of technology has been a game changer, enabling investigators to prune false leads and focus on credible tips quickly.
Family members of missing women who have been traced and reunited shared emotional accounts of relief and gratitude. One relative in Pune, who requested anonymity, said, “We had lost hope after weeks of silence. But when the Special Cell took over, the pace of the investigation changed. Within days, we were contacted with updates.”
Public response has largely been positive, though some activists have urged authorities to expand the initiative to include missing men and children, and to ensure transparency in reporting.
While the rise in recovery rates is a significant achievement, officials acknowledge ongoing challenges. Some areas still face delays due to limited local resources, and there is a pressing need for more trained officers, especially in rural districts.
Experts believe that continuous training, better forensic support, and consistent public communication will be necessary to sustain progress.
