Maharashtra Schools To Remain Closed On December 5 As Teachers Call Statewide Strike

All primary and secondary schools in Maharashtra will close on December 5 after teacher and non-teaching staff unions call a statewide strike, protesting several policies including mandatory TET and new staffing norms.

Pune | December 3, 2025: Statewide strike action by multiple teacher and non-teaching staff organisations has forced schools across Maharashtra to remain shut on December 5. The protest has been called to oppose recent government decisions that teachers say negatively affect job security, pay, and working conditions.

Key demands include revoking the mandatory Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) requirement for educators hired before 2013 and abandoning a controversial staff-approval resolution that alters staffing norms. Teachers also demand reinstatement of older pension schemes and an end to non-academic duties being assigned to teaching staff. Many aided and rural schools fear the new policies could threaten their functioning.

In districts like Pune, the strike plan includes a march by teaching staff from the Zilla Parishad building to the district collector’s office, followed by a public demonstration. As a result, all primary and secondary schools — government, aided and private — are expected to remain closed for the day.

Officials and union leaders have said this protest is aimed at drawing attention to long-pending demands and potential harm to the state’s education system. They have demanded urgent government intervention. School authorities are advising parents and students to monitor official notices for updates on future classes or revised academic schedules.
