Meta Developing AI Pendant and Corporate Wearables to Rebound from Financial Losses

A leaked internal memo reveals Meta Platforms Inc. plans to trial an AI-powered pendant and launch a business-oriented wearable ecosystem next year to offset significant deficits in its hardware division.

MENLO PARK, June 1, 2026 : Meta Platforms Inc. is executing a dramatic shift in its hardware product strategy, outlining a comprehensive roadmap for consumer and enterprise smart devices. The social media giant intends to initiate public testing of an artificial intelligence-integrated pendant device within the next twelve months, marking an aggressive expansion beyond its current virtual reality portfolio.
According to a leaked corporate memo distributed by Alex Himel, Meta’s Vice President of Wearables, the company intends to launch a dedicated business service dubbed “Wearables for Work.” The initiative represents a concerted effort to broaden the commercial utility of spatial computing and augmented reality devices. The strategy focuses heavily on scaling production, with internal documentation indicating a target sales volume of 10 million wearable units globally during the second half of 2026.
The hardware pivot comes in response to severe fiscal pressures within Reality Labs, Meta’s specialized metaverse and hardware development ecosystem. The division reported an operating loss of $4.03 billion during the opening quarter of the fiscal year, managing to generate only $402 million in total revenue. Executives hope that more practical, daily-use AI accessories can bridge the financial gap left by slower-than-expected consumer adoption of premium virtual reality headsets.
To accelerate its development timeline, Meta acquired AI-wearables startup Limitless last year, absorbing its proprietary technology designed for a lightweight, clip-on pendant that records, transcribes, and summarizes real-world conversations. Meta also plans to expand its existing consumer partnerships with EssilorLuxottica, the parent company of Ray-Ban and Oakley, to introduce next-generation smart glasses into additional international markets.

Corporate representatives have declined to comment on the internal timeline, but industry analysts suggest that pivot toward workplace-centric artificial intelligence hardware remains essential for stabilizing the firm’s long-term electronics manufacturing investments.
