A major security breach has hit Instagram, with numerous users alleging that Meta’s own customer support artificial intelligence chatbot inadvertently assisted malicious actors in hijacking their personal accounts.

Social media giant Meta has launched an emergency operation to secure affected Instagram accounts following a wave of targeted cyberattacks. The incident has sparked massive outrage online after victims came forward claiming that the platform’s automated customer service infrastructure was weaponized against them.
The alarming trend first surfaced on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit, where stranded users shared screenshots and video recordings of their interactions. The evidence purports to show hackers successfully convincing Meta’s AI support assistant which is marketed as a reliable, 24/7 automated tool built to resolve account issues to change the primary email addresses linked to the targets’ profiles. Once the AI completed the switch, the intruders easily initiated password resets, locking out the rightful owners.
Tech media outlets reported that several high-profile handles were compromised during the exploit, potentially including an archive account tied to Barack Obama’s White House tenure, though a direct link to the AI vulnerability in that specific case remains unconfirmed. Disturbingly, prominent cybersecurity analyst Jane Manchun Wong revealed that her profile was hijacked despite having robust multi-factor authentication (MFA) enabled, contradicting early reports that MFA offered sufficient protection.

The controversy arrives at a delicate moment for Meta, coming right on the heels of a massive corporate downsizing initiative that involved laying off thousands of employees. Critics suggest the resulting staff shortage may have left automated systems under-monitored.
Downplaying the systemic security lapse, Meta’s Communications Director Andy Stone announced on X that the underlying issue has been fully resolved and affected accounts are actively being recovered. However, the tech conglomerate has yet to provide an official breakdown of how the exploit occurred or identify the perpetrators behind the coordinated breach.
