Seattle | June 16, 2026: Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has issued a strong warning about the future of artificial intelligence, cautioning businesses against relying too heavily on a handful of powerful AI firms that could eventually capture most of the economic value generated by the technology.

In recent remarks, Nadella argued that companies should focus on building their own internal learning systems powered by both human expertise and AI capabilities, rather than depending entirely on external AI providers. He warned that an overconcentration of power among a small number of advanced AI companies could weaken industries by stripping businesses of their proprietary knowledge and competitive advantages.

“The last thing any of us want is a world where every company across every sector is ceding value to a few models,” Nadella reportedly said, highlighting concerns that AI dominance by a limited group of firms could create broader economic and societal risks. He suggested that businesses should treat AI as a tool to strengthen organisational intelligence instead of replacing human judgment and institutional expertise.

Nadella also introduced the idea of “token capital,” referring to AI systems developed and owned by companies themselves, which can learn from internal knowledge and workflows over time. According to him, the real opportunity in the AI era lies not only in choosing the most advanced models but in creating sustainable systems that combine human intelligence with machine learning.

His comments arrive at a time when global businesses are rapidly adopting generative AI tools from companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic, raising concerns about market concentration, innovation control, and long-term dependency on a few technology providers. Experts believe Nadella’s warning could shape future debates around AI regulation, enterprise strategy, and digital competition in the years ahead.
