Nagpur authorities have arrested two individuals in connection with the circulation of the Maharashtra State Board HSC Chemistry exam paper on a WhatsApp group minutes before the exam on 18 February. Officials clarified that this does not amount to an official paper leak, and students will not need to retake the exam

Nagpur | 25 February 2026: The incident unfolded at St Ursula’s College when an invigilator noticed a student spending nearly 20 minutes in the washroom before the 11 am Chemistry exam. A subsequent check revealed the student was carrying a mobile phone, which is strictly prohibited inside examination halls. Investigation showed that a WhatsApp group had received an image of the Chemistry paper between 10:37 am and 10:40 am, just before the exam started.

Further inquiry revealed that the same group had circulated content resembling the Physics paper conducted on 16 February, involving approximately 12 students. Officials confirmed that the student with the phone did not open the message or use it during the exam, ensuring no unfair advantage was gained. Another student associated with the WhatsApp group confirmed their membership, prompting a deeper investigation.

Police traced the source of the circulation to a tuition teacher in the Mankapur area. Both the teacher and a second individual linked to the WhatsApp group were arrested. Authorities are now examining all group members and conducting a technical analysis of the accounts to determine whether the material was circulated for monetary gain.

This case highlights the increasing vigilance of examination authorities and law enforcement to maintain integrity in board examinations.
