Parliamentary Panel to Scrutinize Paid Services of X and Meta Over Net Neutrality Concerns

May 27, 2026 | New Delhi: The paid subscription models introduced by prominent social media platforms are now under the intense scrutiny of the Indian Parliament. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology is gearing up to question the premium service policies of digital tech giants. According to committee sources, the panel plans to issue official summons to major corporations, including X (formerly Twitter) and Meta, to conduct a thorough inquiry into their operations. The primary objective is to evaluate whether these premium, paid-for services fundamentally contradict the established principles of net neutrality and consumer rights.

Addressing the development on Tuesday, Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament and committee chairman Nishikant Dubey revealed that a detailed discussion took place during a crucial meeting on May 26. The central theme of this extensive deliberation was ensuring equitable internet access and maintaining uncompromised service quality for all users across the nation. The committee brainstormed the critical issue of securing equal digital rights for every citizen navigating the online ecosystem.

Dubey highlighted a growing digital disparity, pointing out that users who pay for premium subscriptions are granted supplementary features, enhanced visibility, and greater operational freedom. Conversely, standard, non-paying consumers continue to face strict traditional limitations. Citing a direct example, he noted that paying subscribers on X benefit from significantly higher character limits and advanced account privileges, leaving the remaining users with restricted baseline functionalities.

The committee firmly believes this matter extends beyond mere technical algorithms, intertwining deeply with constitutional guarantees and consumer protection frameworks. Ensuring equal internet rights for India’s 1.4 billion citizens is deemed paramount, as the constitutional right to equality applies equally to the digital footprint of every individual. Net neutrality remains crucial to guaranteeing that all internet users receive uniform treatment without discrimination based on financial capability. Consequently, the parliamentary panel will thoroughly investigate whether these tiered social media services are actively amplifying digital inequality across the country.
