Pune, June 18, 2026:
Serious allegations that private hospitals in Pune are refusing treatment to economically weaker patients and demanding advance deposits before providing medical care triggered a heated debate during a recent meeting of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) General Body. The issue drew strong reactions from corporators, who questioned whether empanelled hospitals are fulfilling their responsibilities toward underprivileged citizens under various public healthcare schemes.
According to discussions held in the General Body, several elected representatives alleged that patients from poor and vulnerable sections of society are being denied timely medical treatment despite being eligible for government-supported healthcare programs. Corporators claimed that some private hospitals associated with civic and government schemes are allegedly insisting on advance payments before admitting patients, placing additional financial burdens on families already struggling with medical emergencies.
The matter sparked concern among members, who emphasized that access to healthcare is a basic right and should not be restricted due to a patient’s financial condition. Representatives argued that hospitals benefiting from public healthcare partnerships and government welfare schemes must ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive treatment without unnecessary delays, procedural hurdles, or financial barriers.
During the discussion, corporators urged civic authorities to investigate complaints received from citizens and take strict action against any hospital found violating the terms of empanelment or failing to provide services mandated under healthcare agreements. They stressed that vulnerable patients should not be forced to arrange deposits or face denial of treatment during critical situations.

Responding to the concerns raised in the General Body, PMC officials assured members that the allegations would be thoroughly examined. Civic authorities stated that complaints against empanelled hospitals would be reviewed in detail and that appropriate action would be initiated wherever violations are established. Officials further indicated that the functioning of hospitals linked to municipal and government healthcare schemes would be closely monitored to ensure compliance with patient welfare norms and healthcare obligations.
The issue is expected to remain under scrutiny as civic authorities assess complaints and review the performance of hospitals associated with public healthcare initiatives in Pune.
