PMRDA Sanctions ₹558 Crore Road Projects to Alleviate Chakan’s Traffic Gridlock
PMRDA approves ₹558 crore for 40.7 km of road works in Chakan, pledging to issue work orders before election code kicks in.
Pune, October 10, 2025: In a significant move to ease chronic congestion, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has approved road works worth ₹558.12 crore for the Chakan industrial belt area. The planned upgrades cover approximately 40.74 km of road stretches and will be fast-tracked, with work orders expected to be issued before the enforcement of the civic election code of conduct.
Under this package, key allocations include ₹196 crore for road improvements in Khed taluka and ₹100 crore for major thoroughfare works around Chakan Chowk. Several segments covering 17.69 km are already in the technical scrutiny phase, while tenders for others have been floated or are being prepared. Land acquisition is underway for additional routes, with priority given to bottleneck stretches critical for industrial traffic flow.
The approval comes amid mounting pressure from local residents, factory workers, and traders, who have endured severe traffic snarls daily. Over 1,000 people recently marched nearly 23 km to PMRDA’s Akurdi office demanding clarity and expedited execution of delayed road projects. In response, officials have assured that PMRDA-related work orders will be issued by December, while work on connected NHAI projects will begin by April next year.
In addition to project implementation, PMRDA has also initiated eviction drives, removing 428 encroachments that obstruct key corridors and impede road widening. The authority has stressed that illegal structures along MIDC and highway routes will not be tolerated and must be cleared for unhindered road development.
Still, some local industrial and residential groups are not entirely satisfied. They plan to protest, citing past delays and demanding clear timelines and accountability. They emphasize that investments alone do not promise relief—only timely execution and maintenance will.
